To understand how a fly's tiny brain processes visual information efficiently enough to guide its aerobatic feats – and ultimately to build more capable robots – researchers in Munich have set up a flight simulator for flies.

The setup consists of a given rigid 3D object filmed with 5 or more high-resolution color cameras and one Kinect. The 3D object is positioned on a flat surface and two sets of images are taken. First the front side of the object is filmed and then after manually turning the object the back side of the object is filmed. The surface is under control, i.e. it can be equipped with calibration marks, such that relative positions of the cameras are know. The 3D CAD model of the object of interest is also available. The main task of the project is a mapping of the high-resolution color images to the CAD data, yielding a seamlessly and finely textured 3D model. The main substrates for oxidative phosphorylation are pyruvate from carbohydrates of fatty acids. If the concentration of glycogen drops, then the rate of pyruvate synthesis drops, too. Classic studies by e.g. Bergström and colleagues show that the muscular glycogen content and time cycled at 75% of the V̇O2max are closely correlated (Bergstrom et al., 1967). However, to our knowledge, no one has investigated the effect of different muscle glycogen levels on the V̇O2max/peak. The aim of this project is therefore to ask the research question: What is the effect of different glycogen concentrations on the V̇O2max/peak? The work packages for this project are: a) Ethics: Obtain permission from the ethics committee b) Glycogen protocols: The aim is to achieve the following conditions: 1) Control (high glycogen), 2) Nutritional glycogen depletion, 3) Glycogen depletion through exercise.
