NAT0111: Hands-on MSc elective in Mass Spectrometry Imaging

12.05.2026, Biete ...

Mass Spectrometry Imaging Course

A compact, hands-on introduction to modern mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) with applications in spatial metabolomics and spatial proteomics.

What You Will Learn

This course provides a structured introduction to the fundamentals of mass spectrometry imaging and quickly progresses into real-world applications.

  • Ionization techniques including MALDI and DESI
  • Sample preparation strategies
  • Acquisition and processing of imaging datasets
  • Interpretation of complex MSI data
  • Applications in spatial metabolomics and proteomics
By the end of the course:
You will be able to design and critically evaluate your own MSI experiments in a life science context.

Hands-On Experience

Each day combines focused morning lectures with extensive practical sessions in the afternoon.

  • Laboratory-based sample preparation
  • Mass spectrometry measurements
  • Data analysis using real datasets
  • Direct interaction with MSI workflows and instrumentation

Who Should Join

This module is intended for Master students in chemistry, biochemistry, and related disciplines.

A basic understanding of mass spectrometry is helpful, but the main requirement is an interest in:

  • Modern analytical chemistry
  • Biomedical research applications
  • Spatial omics technologies

Why Take This Course

Mass spectrometry imaging is a rapidly developing field with increasing relevance in biology and medicine.

This course offers:

  • A compact but in-depth introduction
  • Direct practical experience
  • Exposure to real biomedical applications
  • Intensive training in a focused format

When?

Second half of September 2026

The teaching component is completed within 8 days during the lecture-free period.

Lecturers

  • AG Strittmatter
    Department of Biosciences,
    TUM School of Natural Sciences
  • Dr. Juliana Goncalves
    Institute of Pathology,
TUM School of Medicine and Health
