Visiting Professor in Political Economy

31.08.2023, Professuren

Call for Applications for a Visiting Professor in Political Economy The Munich School of Politics and Public Policy at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) seeks to appoint, for the winter semester 2023/24 (1 October 2023 – 31 March 2024), a visiting professor at the rank of visiting assistant professor to teach the Core Course for the Political Economy specialization in our Master in Politics & Technology (plus one other course).

Applicants are expected to hold a doctorate in political science, economics or a closely related field. They should provide evidence of scholarly expertise in international or comparative political economy and the ability to teach, in English, a Master's-level course that provides students with an understanding of the interaction of politics and economics, commensurate with Persson & Tabellini's Political Economics and core PE texts in Political Science so as to prepare the students for taking advanced graduate courses in Political Economy in subsequent semesters of our Politics & Technology Master's Program.

The visiting professor will teach a second PE course of his/her own choosing; a course in applied economics (or similar quantitative methods) would be particularly welcome.

We expect to appoint a visiting professor with an active research agenda. We are especially interested in scholars whose research interests include political-economic drivers or consequences of technology, broadly conceived, so as to allow them to take advantage of TUM's special strengths in the natural sciences and engineering.

The visiting professor will be based at the Munich School of Politics and Public Policy (adjacent to the downtown Munich campus of TUM). S/he will be paid on the salary scale for German W2 professorships, supplemented by modest funds for travel, research assistance, or other expenses related to teaching and research. We are seeking a one-semester (6-months) commitment to meet our immediate teaching needs, but a full-year appointment may be possible if desired.

TUM is Germany's most highly ranked research university, which strives to provide excellent working conditions in a lively multi- and interdisciplinary scientific community comparable to the leading research universities around the world, including assistance with relocation and integration of visiting professors. English is the primary language of instruction in our Master's program, and professional proficiency is expected; basic knowledge of German is helpful but not required.

Applications should include a cover letter addressing the applicant's qualifications for teaching the Political Economy core course and a current CV including a list of publications (highlighting the three most important publications if applicable).  We strongly recommend you include a research statement or similar overview of research interests as well as a teaching statement, including evidence of teaching effectiveness.  Letters of recommendation (sent jointly or separately) are welcome but not required.

Please address your application to the Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Technology, Prof. Dr. Urs Gasser <urs.gasser@tum.de>.
Please send it at your earliest convenience, copying appointments@sot.tum.de and copying the Head of Program for the HfP Master in Politics & Technology, Prof. Dr. Tim Büthe <buthe@hfp.tum.de>.
Profs. Büthe and Gasser are also available to answer questions in advance. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and until the position is filled.
