Doctoral Research Associate (m/w/d) - Chair of Strategic and International Management

15.03.2026, Academic staff

The Chair of Strategic and International Management, headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Hutzschenreuter invites applications as Doctoral Research Associate (m/f/d) in the area of strategy&global contexts.

Our research addresses strategies, transformations, and firm success. We strive to provide insights critical to business practice and to further develop strategic concepts and theories. We focus on three areas: strategy and technology (in particular, deep tech such as AI, robotics, biotech), strategy and global contexts, and the theory of the firm (see www.msl.mgt.tum.de/simanagement). We not only cooperate with renowned scholars at home and abroad, but also with well-established corporate partners. Research results are presented at international conferences and also applied to business practice.

A number of current and former doctoral students have won competitive funding.

Previous doctoral candidates of Professor Hutzschenreuter are today executives in multinational enterprises, international strategy consultancies, and private equity companies, and work for renowned business schools.

Your research project is an integral part of the Chair’s research and leads to co-authored publications. You will work along a structured project plan with clear milestones for each semester. As part of the doctoral studies at TUM Graduate Center (LINK), you will learn the methods of academic research and have access to opportunities for content-specific postgraduate courses.

Requirements

  • Successfully finished studies with a focus on business and management (e.g., business administration, industrial engineering, business informatics, or economics), informatics, or natural sciences/engineering with an outstanding degree (resp. graduation shortly)
  • Internships or other professional experiences
  • Profound knowledge in strategic management, finance and accounting, and programming skills are an advantage
  • Excellent analytical and language skills, team spirit, and passion for scientific work
  • Practical experience in a relevant field is an advantage

What we offer

Our doctoral study process (see www.msl.mgt.tum.de/simanagement) has a clear structure that ensures doctoral candidates can graduate after no more than three years. Candidates may pursue an internal doctorate (employed by TUM, salary according to the TV-L E13 level) or an external doctorate, provided they meet the requirements outlined in TUM guidelines, which must be fulfilled. As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, TUM explicitly encourages applications from women and all others who would bring additional diversity dimensions to the university’s research and teaching strategies. Preference will be given to candidates with disabilities who have essentially the same qualifications.

Application

We are looking forward to receiving your complete application (cover letter, CV, A-level certificate or equivalent, certificates/transcripts of records of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, work and internship reference letters). Please hand in all documents in a single PDF file to maria.vuillemin@tum.de. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Maria Vuillemin (Tel. +49 (0)89 289 28132).

The position is suitable for disabled persons. Disabled applicants will be given preference in case of generally equivalent suitability, aptitude and professional performance.
