Locations of TU München

TUM has three major locations in Bavaria: Munich, Garching and Weihenstephan. The university’s 13 academic departments and main research institutes are located at these campuses. TUM also has an international presence on four continents. In 2002, it became the first German university to open an overseas campus: TUM Asia in Singapor.

Campus Munich:

Munich has been the heart of TUM since its foundation in 1868. Facilities are concentrated around three areas of the city: the inner city campus on Arcisstrasse, the Olympic Park and the university clinics.

Campus Garching

The Garching campus north of Munich is TUM’s center of science and technology. With over 12,000 students and five academic departments, it is the university’s largest location. The campus is also home to two top centers of research: the TUM Institute for Advanced Study and the TUM Graduate School. Fast underground (U6) and motorway links make Garching easy to reach from the city center.

  • Academic Departments in Garching: Five of TUM’s academic departments are located on the Garching campus: Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics und Informatics.
  • TUM Corporate Research Centers: The academic departments cooperate closely with the TUM Corporate Research Centers in Garching across disciplines ranging from medical engineering through semiconductor physics to the FRM II experimental neutron source. The Garching campus was built around the site of the first Research Reactor Munich (FRM I), which was opened in 1957.
  • Interdisciplinary Network: : TUM networks with a number of important research institutes at the Garching campus: Max-Planck Institutes, the Leibniz Supercomputing Center (LRZ) of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and institutes of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU).

Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan

Scientists at TUM’s Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan are engaged in interdisciplinary research in the life sciences. The campus is located on the outskirts of the old cathedral town of Freising and has evolved from the traditional disciplines of agricultural and life sciences.

  • Largest Academic Department: With over 90 professorships, the Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan (WZW) is TUM’s largest academic department. The WZW was incorporated into TUM in 1930, and this location with its rich history is now a leading research center for top scientists.
  • Key Challenges: Scientists at the WZW tackle the key challenges facing life sciences as we move forward – these range from biotechnology and genetic engineering through nutrition and foodstuffs to the sustainable use of land. There is even a brewery on site, making TUM the only university in the world with its own brewery.
