Mission statement of Technische Universität München

"Talents are our assets, reputation is our return"

1. Servant of an Innovative Society

Embracing the basic understanding that its duty is to serve society, the Technical University of Munich is committed to innovative progress in those fields of science that promise sustainable improvements in the ways people live and live together. Out of its sense of responsibility for future generations, it has established the following interdisciplinary research areas: Health & Nutrition - Energy & Natural Resources - Environment & Climate - Information & Communications - Mobility & Infrastructure.

2. International Best Standards

The Technical University of Munich orients itself scientifically, structurally, and organizationally according to the best international standards. Thus it is networked worldwide. For benchmarks it draws on international alliances with leading teaching and research institutions. With its "Emerging Field Policy," it opens up new fields of development between science and industry.

3. Cosmopolitanism and Cultural Respect

We view "internationality" as the link binding our homeland with the world. Based on the liberal set of values of an enlightened society, cosmopolitanism includes respect for the cultural identity of people in other regions of the world. With our international presence in science and technology, we want to foster better understanding between nations.

4. Talents with Conscience

At the center of the Technical University of Munich stand our young talents. They shape the future. We support them in bringing their own potential for achievement and individual gifts to maturity by integrating them into the environment of experienced and accomplished senior scientists. Our educational goals include professional expertise, good judgment, and a sense of responsibility. Mental and emotional creativity, cultural sensitivity, and social competence are as important to us as professional confidence and entrepreneurial boldness. We offer targeted support for the most gifted young scientists through the TUM:JUNGE AKADEMIE, the TUM GRADUATE SCHOOL, and the TUM INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY.

5. Entrepreneurial Thinking and Action

With its guiding idea of "the" Entrepreneurial University, the Technical University of Munich is committed to the principle of competitive performance. It proactively brings results from fundamental research into market-oriented innovation processes and stimulates the entrepreneurial spirit in all areas of the university. TUM initiates the founding of growth-oriented startup companies by its members and supports them, through non-bureaucratic measures, until they achieve successful market positions. Our entrepreneurial activities are consistently geared toward taking a leadership role in Europe in founding research-based, growth-oriented technology startups.

6. Creating Value by Living Our Values

The Technical University of Munich finds special worth in the variety and diversity of individual talents. A culture of appreciation within the university "family" contributes significantly to our "value added." We actively promote equal treatment of women and men. We forcefully pursue the goal of becoming Germany's most attractive technical university to women, and as a family-oriented university we invest in making family life and a professional career compatible.

7. Contract Between Generations

The "family" of the Technical University of Munich profits from the mutual support and interconnectedness of its members across disciplines, nationalities, and generations. It unites the enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity of students, the creative spirit of graduates, and the life experience of alumni into a worldwide network. It values the expertise of its TUM EMERITI OF EXCELLENCE and their active participation as helpful advisors.

8. Public Dialogue

The Technical University of Munich seeks dialogue with the public. Society should know what we in science and technology are doing for our future, and we also want to know what society expects of us.
