Director General of Bayerischer Rundfunk

Ulrich Wilhelm was born in Munich in 1961. In 1983, he graduated from the German School of Journalism (DJS) with a degree in editorial journalism. He studied law at the Universities of Passau and Munich. He combined his study with work as a freelance journalist, which culminated in the position of Senior Editor at Bayerischer Rundfunk. In 1991, he joined the civil service as a fully qualified lawyer, initially at the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior. In 1993, Wilhelm joined the Bavarian state chancellery, where he was appointed press spokesman for the Bavarian Minister-President and state government in 1999. In 2004, he became Head of Department of the Bavarian State Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts. He moved to Berlin in 2005 to take up the post of Head of the German government’s Press and Information Office and government spokesman with the rank of State Secretary. In May 2010, the Broadcasting Council of Bayerischer Rundfunk elected him Director General with 40 votes out of 44. Wilhelm resigned from his government posts and became Director General of Bayerischer Rundfunk in February 2011.
