Dr. Edmund Stoiber

Former Minister-President of the Bavarian state government
Member of the Bavarian parliament from 1974 to 2008

Dr. Stoiber war born on 28 September 1941 in Oberaudorf, Bavaria. He is Catholic and married with three children.

After completing his Abitur exam and military service in the mountain division (Gebirgsdivision) in Bad Reichenhall and Mittenwald, Bavaria, Dr. Stoiber studied law and political science at the University of Munich and the Munich School of Political Science.

After that, he became a research fellow at the Chair of Criminal Law and Eastern European Law at the University of Regensburg. After passing the 2nd State Examination in Law in 1971, he joined the Bavarian State Ministry for Regional Development and Environmental Affairs. From 1972 to 1974, he served as personal aide to the Minister, ultimately becoming Head of the Minister’s Office.

Until 1976, he was District Chairman of the Junge Union (young conservative party), Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen. He became a member of the CSU District Executive Committee in Upper Bavaria in 1975. From 1978 to 1984, he was a member of the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district assembly. He was admitted to practice as a lawyer in July 1978. From July 1978 to October 1982, he held the position of in-house lawyer at Lotto-Toto-Vertriebsgemeinschaft in Bayern. From November 1978 to April 1983, he served as Secretary General of the CSU party in Bavaria. From November 1989 to October 1993, he was Deputy Chairman of the CSU and from November 1989 to November 1993, Chairman of the CSU Policy Commission. He was a member of the Bavarian parliament from 1974 to 2008.

Dr. Stoiber served as Chairman of the CSU from 1999 to 2007. He has held the title of Honorary Chairman of the party since 2007. From 1982 to 1986, he was Secretary of State in the Bavarian state chancellery. He became Minister of State in 1986. He served as Bavarian Minister of the Interior from 1988 to 1993.

Dr. Stoiber was Minister-President of Bavaria from 1993 to 2007.
