Prof. Dr. med. Karl Max Einhäupl

Chairman of the Executive Board of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin

Neurologist, born in Munich in 1947, studied medicine at Munich’s Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU).

1974: Completed German and US medical board examinations.

1975: Obtained doctorate at LMU.

1977-81: Clinical training at Großhadern Medical Center in Munich.

1981-82: Psychiatric training 1982: Medical Director at Treatment Center for Multiple Sclerosis.

1982: Returned to Großhadern Medical Center. 1986: Obtained lecturer qualification in neurology.

1988: Appointed professor at LMU’s Department of Neurology, with a focus on neurological intensive care medicine.

1992: Appointed Chair of Neurology at Humboldt University Berlin.

Since 1993: Director of Department of Neurology at Charité Berlin.

1995-2005: Spokesman for Collaborative Research Center 507 “The Role of Non-Neuronal Cells in Neurological Diseases”.

Since 1999: Spokesman for Competence Network Stroke.

2004: Awarded German Federal Cross of Merit.

Since 1998: Member of German Council of Science and Humanities (WR).

Since 2001: Chairman of WR.

2001: Member of Steering Committee of National Genome Research Network; honorary member of the Austrian Society of Neurology and corresponding member of the American Neurological Association.

2002: Chairman of Foundation Council of the German Foundation for Stroke Support.

Since 2003: Member of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s Health Research Council.

Since 2005: Member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Since 2007: Member of the Board of Trustees of Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg.

Since 2007: Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TUM.
