TUM Institute for Advanced Study
Founded in 2005, the "TUM Institute for Advanced Study" (TUM-IAS) occupies a central position in terms of both structure and content. Its purpose is to sharpen TUM's inimitable profile of Natural Sciences – Engineering Sciences – Medicine – Life Sciences on an international level. In the same way as the legendary IAS in Princeton, the TUM-IAS is based on the conviction that an atmosphere of creativity and inspiration, freedom and unbureaucratic support for excellent scientists is the most fertile ground for outstanding progress.
Liberated from the bureaucratic burden of traditional university routine, internationally acclaimed top researchers are given a working environment that enables completely new, high-risk research projects without the daily need for justification based on the promise of short-term success. Pioneering performances in science are often the result of "speculative trains of thought" fertilised by interdisciplinary dialogue. So the TUM-IAS is simultaneously a "knowledge exchange platform" for high-calibre scientists from TUM, companies engaged in industrial research and abroad (visiting scientists from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, for example).
