In 2006, the German Council of Science and Humanities (WR) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) selected TUM as a “University of Excellence” for its forward-looking strategy TUM. The Entrepreneurial University. TUM’s International Graduate School of Science and Engineering (IGSSE) and the Clusters of Excellence Cognition for Technical Systems (CoTeSys) and Origin and Structure of the Universe have also been selected for funding. In the past five years, TUM has received around EUR 150 million in funding, which has greatly advanced cutting-edge research at the university.

Graduate schools

The TUM International Graduate School of Science and Engineering (IGSSE) qualified for first-round funding under the Excellence Initiative sponsored by the German federal and state governments on the strength of its interdisciplinary concept in particular.

Excellence clusters

TUM was appointed coordinator of two clusters in the first round of the Excellence Initiative. It also plays an active role in a further three clusters of excellence.

Institutional strategy

Entrepreneurial spirit at TUM means promoting and synergizing a wide range of diverse talents. In the context of top-level research, this means giving individuals as much academic freedom as possible with the support of a science-friendly, efficient administrative backbone. The “TUM. The Entrepreneurial University” forward-looking concept was developed specifically to encourage an entrepreneurial mindset and work culture at the university.

TUM Institute for Advanced Study

The structure and content of this concept are built on the "TUM Institute for Advanced Study" (TUM-IAS) TUM-IAS, which was founded in 2005. Its purpose is to raise TUM’s unique profile among international audiences as an integrative platform for natural, engineering, medical and life sciences.

Gender & Diversity

TUM would like to become Germany’s most attractive technical university for female students and scientists. The Excellence Initiative gives us a unique opportunity to make a lasting difference to women’s prospects in academic circles.

Comprehensive Support

The far-reaching career development program includes measures ranging from “reverse integration” of TUM into the school education system (especially high schools or Gymnasium in Germany) to the integration of selected, exceptional emeritus professors into the university’s day-to-day activities.

Entrepreneurial Culture

The success of a university depends not only on excellent scientists and researchers, but also on the ability of corporate management to put the right support framework in place. TUM remains committed to its restructuring program, aimed at increasing efficiency within a service- and research-oriented management culture.

Sustainable Investments

TUM is determined to maintain the university’s performance in the long term and secure a broader financial footing.
