The Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) is a research cluster dedicated to nanoscience which was successful in the nationwide Excellence Initiative launched by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 2006. NIM has been sponsored since November 2006 for an initial period of five years and is financed with funds provided by this initiative.

Scientists from the fields of Physics, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacye, Biology, Electrical Engineering and Medicine in and around Munich work alongside each other in this cluster of excellence. The overarching goal of NIM research is to develop, produce and control diverse artificial and multifunctional nanosystems. It is hoped that this research will open up applications in the sphere of information technology and medically relevant technologies, or a combination of both areas.

Apart from the host university, Munich's Ludwig Maximilian University, the other institutes involved in the Nanosystems Initiative Munich are Technische Universität München (TUM), the University of Augsburg, the Munich-based University of Applied Science, the Walther Meissner Institute belonging to the Bavarian Academy of Science (BAdW), the Max Planck Institutes for Biochemistry and Quantum Optics and the Deutsches Museum (German Museum).
