Having been set up jointly by Munich's two universities and the Max Planck Association, the Centre aims at a deeper understanding of these and other fields of interest, offering a remarkable range of research and application themes. By expanding the existing research teams in Munich, the Centre is able to establish a photonics infrastructure coupled with a network comprising physicists, biologists and medical practitioners who have set their sights on important scientific and technological goals.
Projects include the high-precision testing of fundamental physical theories, evolving cutting-edge electronics developments through the specific construction of quantum systems by way of prototypes for future quantum computers, manipulating matter using light and the atomic resolution imaging of biomolecules, to name a few examples. Besides a new generation of visualisation techniques for medical diagnostic purposes, the centre's agenda covers the production of innovative laser-operated particle sources and the development of compact tumour therapy equipment for small laboratories and hospitals.
Outstanding junior scientists are involved in this new network, with crucial support from a unique interdisciplinary environment to launch them on their careers. Being integrated in both local and international co-operations, they will be introduced to important scientific problems and become acquainted with the latest discoveries and technologies by contributing towards their acquisition process.
