Das Erstellen von Vorhersagen findet im Wettlauf zwischen zunehmender Komplexität der realen Welt und unseren wachsenden Fähigkeiten statt, diese unter Nutzung informationstechnischer Möglichkeiten mathematisch zu beschreiben.
Aktuelle Trends im Maschinenlernern sind rekurrente Netzwerke und „deep learning“. Mathematisch gesehen, eignen sich speziell neuronale Netzwerke zur Modellierung hochdimensionaler Probleme mit einem hohen Grad an Nichtlinearität.
Beispiele aus der praktischen Anwendung wie die Prognose der elektrischen Last, der Einspeisung aus erneuerbaren Energien oder von Marktpreisen verdeutlichen die Vorteile dieses Modellierungsansatzes.

Forecasting is a race between the increasing complexity of the real world and our accelerating ability to mathematically represent it by means of information-technology-related capabilities. New trends in machine learning are recurrent networks and deep learning. From a mathematical point of view, especially neural networks allow the construction of models, which are able to handle high-dimensional problems along with a high degree of nonlinearity. Examples from real-world real-world applications will be given that outline the merits of such a modeling approach. We will deal with the modeling of e.g. the energy supply from renewable sources, energy load forecasting as well as the forecasting of energy prices of different market segements.
