Finding accommodation in Munich
It can be difficult to find a room in Munich – especially at the start of the winter term during the months of October and November. The majority of Munich's roughly 100,000 students live in private rooms, shared flats or appartments. Only about 13% live in halls of residence. Student halls in Germany are usually run by the Studentenwerk, or sometimes by public or private funding bodies. Bookings have to be made directly with the halls of residence (Exception: Double Degree, TUMExchange, ERASMUS). Depending on the student hall concerned, there can be a waiting time of one to four semesters. Rooms are raffled by the Studentenwerk at the beginning of each winter term.
The average rent for a sublet room is about 350 €. Rooms in shared flats and appartments cost between 400 and 650 €, depending on the location and the facilities/furnishings. Rooms in halls of residence cost between 280 and 360 €. Your best asset when flat or room-hunting is patience. Looking for a room in winter can take several months.
Attention! Do not transfer any deposit or rent in advance from abroad if you're not hundred percent sure that the accommodation really exists. In case of doubt please contact the Welcome Office of TUM!
