Description of course of studies

TopMath is centered at the TU Munich (TUM), a leading institute of technology in Europe. This excellence program supports and challenges the most talented students of mathematics at an early stage, introduces them to mathematical research, and is supposed to lead to a doctoral degree within a total of 6 to 7 years of (undergraduate and graduate) studies. While the first two years of study are within the general basic mathematics program, an increasingly research-oriented phase begins with the third year, with intensive one-to-one tuition sessions ("Independent Studies") gradually replacing regular lectures. To accommodate the strong emphasis on its research component, TopMath has established an intensive advisory setup.

TopMath aims at the top 3 to 5 per cent of all mathematics majors. Studies can be performed at the TUM but also at cooperating institutions, particularly the Mathematics Institute of the University of Augsburg. The main entrance criterion is the completion of all mathematical examinations of the first two years with high distinction. TopMath's general area of "Applied Mathematics" corresponds to the excellently rated profile of the TUM Mathematics Department, which comprises a broad array of fields of modern mathematics at an exceptionally high scientific level.
