The Technical Faculty of the FAU and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the TUM offer a joint elite master study course on the topic of systems of information and multimedia technology, leading to the degree Master of Science with honours (M.Sc.(hons)). Students from Erlangen, which have entered the elite study course from diploma study courses, may earn a diploma degree alternatively. The elite master study course is based on bachelor and diploma programs of FAU and TUM, but also of other universities that focus on information and communication technology, and extends them. A specialization in selected topics up to the state of the art in scientific research in the area of SIM as well as the acquisition of interdisciplinary knowledge is intended. Other aims are the development of personality and the acquisition of key competence. The main objective is to shape young specialists which are capable to do research in the area of information and communication technology, in order to form and strengthen a technical-scientific elite in these fields which is beneficial for economy and research in Bavaria. Due to the special promotion of the students, the gap to the state of the art in scientific research, which is obvious for regular study courses, is significantly smaller after the elite master study course. Therefore, a subsequent Ph.D. study course would require noticeably less time.
