WeihenstephanDescription of course of studies
In the course of studium natural, students are trained polyvalently in naturale sciences by giving them the opportunity to experience science in concrete projects. Thus, studium natural is providing a link between life sciences and neighbouring sciences such as mathematics, physics and chemistry. Apart from imparting knowledge, students are encouraged to work independently. By doing this and based on concrete knowledge, students should be enabled to decide which discipline is an ideal choice for them after completing studium naturale. The academic year is divided into five modules. The basic modules of Mathematics, Physics and Life Sciences (Chemistry / Biology) consist of a deepening overview of basic concepts and methods. First, students receive lectures, exercises and basic research-related tutorials, which provide them with insight into the various subjects and the scientific work. Second, the contents of the basic modules are taught by constantly reflecting on interdisciplinary issues. In addition, students receive a first insight into the research practice by attending internships.
The three basic modules are complemented by a general multidisciplinary module. Besides an introduction into the philosophy of science, students receive knowledge concerning scientific methods of reading and writing. Again in preparation for the subsequent studies, foreign language courses (mainly English courses) with a special focus on science will be offered. The σ-module completes the structure of the studium naturale as the 5th module. Within the σ-module students have the opportunity to choose "σ-courses" from all courses offered by the TUM.
Upon completion of the studium natural, students can easily find their way in the broad offer of study programs at TUM. In addition, studium naturale has its effects on the subsequent bachelor programs:
- Consideration of studium natural in aptitude tests.
- Possibility to recognise passed exams in the amount of up to one semester.
- Availability of time resources in order to choose from the whole subject catalogue at TUM or to spend more time studying abroad or for industrial internships.
- Improving the individual skills profile
