Conservator-Restorers are privileged people. They may lay hands on things denied to others. They experience at close quarters ideas that have become reality. They see beneath the surface of things, literally obtaining insights ‘into’ art. Such a privilege also imposes obligations, of course. It presupposes a comprehensive knowledge of materials and techniques and should ideally result in a profound expertise and connoisseurship. The science of conservation at the Technische Universität München is not only based on a collaboration with the architects of the faculty, but with virtually all other faculties and institutions of the TUM. Modern conservation calls for teamwork between numerous specialist disciplines as well as the use of all the resources of natural sciences and the humanities. Interdisciplinary collaboration is not a mere catchphrase – it is the normal situation. In the world of art and the preservation of historic structures, conservation is just one of a whole network of sciences.
Conservators work on everything from miniatures to monuments, on landmarks of technology and contemporary art, on works made of gold and clay, stone and concrete, glass and polycarbonates, paper, fabrics and leather and many more. The possible combination of materials as a vast as the range of works themselves and the tasks involved.
The department for conservation and restoration at the Technische Universität München cooperates therefore in research and teaching with numerous other state institutions, like the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Doerner Institut, the Bavarian State Library (IBR), Bayerisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege and the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (BNM). The university department is in fact, accommodated in the studio building of the museum BNM. There is also a close cooperation with the Bayerische Verwaltung der staatlichen Schlösser, Seen und Gärten, with the Deutsches Museum and with numerous other bodies and collections in Bavaria and other states.
One main focus of research in the programm for conservation and restoration is the use and trade of artist’s materials. The use of e.g. pigments by artists in different periods of history and with different techniques is investigated and documented in various seminars, bachelor, master and PhD projects.
Further emphasis is on questions of originality and later additions, alterations to works of art, links between workshops and the investigation of working and production methods in different periods.
Only the profound knowledge of the individual use of materials and the identification of influences that cause ageing and subsequent changes can guarantee the application of the appropriate conservation concept and the realisation of relevant conservation methods and restoration techniques.
