Description of course of studies

The Master in Condensed Matter Physics is a two year full time programme with 120 CP in total. The programme is consecutive to the Physics Bachelor programme and leads to actual research contents.

During first year students choose from the wide catalogue of specialty modules, according to their interests. The catalogue consists of chosen topics from experimental to theoretical Physics and represents the scientific profile of the Physics-Department at TUM. The research areas cover Condensed matter (KM), Particle-, Nuclear- and Astrophysics (KTA) and Biophysics (BIO). The applied fields in these areas compose the contents for the study programme Applied and Engineering Physics (AEP). Examples of the catalogue are listed at the end of the course description. Four elective modules (worth 20 CP) have to be chosen from the focus KM, two more elective courses (10 CP) from the complementary fields.

The programme is consolidated by the mandatory course in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics (10CP) and completes hereby the broad profile and professional focus of the physics course. Additional students have to pass a Proseminar and the advanced laboratory. These are thematically assigned to the main focus and will be credited as course achievements.

Connections to neighbouring sciences and applications of Physics in Engineering or Medicine are ensured through the Non-physical electives. Students can choose exams compassing 8 CP from a catalogue that is to be defined by the examinations board. Two CP will be credited as course achievements from the module “Soft skills”.

During second year students concentrate on their research project which can be carried out either at one of the institutes of the physics department of TUM or one of the associated institutes (Max Planck Institutes, etc.). Students are directly involved in the research on a recent topic in either Theoretical or Experimental Physics whilst working on their project. The research is supplemented by the Master Seminar (10 CP) and the Masters-Praktikum (15 CP) which provide necessary prerequisites in conception and creation for the following Master’s thesis (30 CP). The Master’s thesis has to be defended in the concluding Master Colloquium (5 CP).
