Description of course of studies

Mathematics in Bioscience is a full-time master’s program with a standard period of four semesters. This program requires a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a comparable.

The importance of applied biosciences and biotechnology in research and industry is rapidly increasing. Mathematical methods and concepts play a crucial role in these fields. Mathematicians working in these areas need to have a basic understanding of the systems and processes involved. In this Master's Program both advanced mathematics courses and courses in the area of life science will be offered for study in an interdisciplinary context. Topics from biosciences and biotechnology include molecular biology, genomics and proteomics, bioprocess technology and technology in medicine. Mathematical topics range from dynamical systems and numerical analysis to probability and statistics, with mathematical modelling as centerpiece. The biosciences lectures will be taught by members of the University’s Center of Life and Food Sciences, thus ensuring high quality and timeliness. Moreover, internships at research or industrial facilities are a compulsory part of the program. Graduates of the biomathematics program will be able to find appropriate positions in research institutes as well as in biotechnological, pharmaceutical and software industries.
