Description of course of studies

The economic future of many countries depends on the success that their manufacturing sector enjoys on the international scene. Without the production of substantial amounts of goods in the fields of plant engineering, mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, aerospace operations, medical engineering and power engineering, many jobs would be at risk and the development of innovative new materials and production techniques wouldn't be on a sound footing any more. The related industrial working processes concern modern computer-aided product development, production and plant operations, and waste disposal. The multidisciplinary character of mechanical engineering is reflected by the development of high-tech products, such as high-performance materials, microelectronics and software, and the constant challenge of determining best technological practices. Mechanical engineers play a contributory role in this extensive field of work. There, they conceive and analyze ideas and solutions, develop, test and manufacture products, and ensure that they are safe in use, all in the best interests of society. Engineers frequently act in an advisory or organizing function, or conduct research in technological sciences, all activities requiring extensive knowledge. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has 30 departments and a staff of 800, and the scope to accommodate personal inclinations and opens up excellent career prospects in crisis-proof fields, and thus offers young people an attractive education with a sound scientific and technical foundation. The Faculty’s ultramodern but inviting new building at the Garching Research Campus features well-equipped lecture theaters and seminar rooms, and is thus an excellent environment for study. Around 3500 computers are available for study and research in laboratories and practice rooms
