Description of course of studies

Starting in the winter semester 2011/12, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Surveying, together with the Faculty of Architecture, offers for the first time an interdisciplinary and inter-faculty Master in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building leading to the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.). Aim of the new programme is the intensive transfer of comprehensive knowledge in the fields of energy efficiency and sustainability in the built-up environment. Focus is given to ecological and energetic conception as well as to economic, social, technical and process-oriented aspects of civil engineering. In consideration of ecological, economic and social aspects, the Master’s course imparts interdisciplinary engineering knowledge and competences in integral design and building, focusing on energy efficiency and sustainability. This requires intertwined and system-oriented thinking, especially because of complex interacting factors that influence each other.

Amongst these factors counts the teaching of fundamental knowledge with regard to scarcity of resources, energy efficiency, regenerative energies, newly developed construction material, material efficiency, life cycle assessments and costs, etc. Methodical abilities are demonstrated based on the students’ previous knowledge in order to develop independent and project-related solutions in the areas of energy and sustainability in the ‘designable’ environment and to apply common assessment procedures.

The degree is designed for Bachelor graduates of architecture and civil engineering, environmental engineering, and, in case of related qualifications, graduates of other studies which will be taught selective, profound technical aspects from the different specializations depending on their previous knowledge.

Major fields of study

The program comprises four semesters, during which 120 credits must be obtained. In the three first semesters, the students will choose their individual curricula by selecting four of the five specializations (72 credits). The core of the curriculum is the interdisciplinary project (9 credits). Further specialization may be obtained through a second interdisciplinary project or by studying additional elective modules (9 credits). The fourth semester serves to write and present the final Master’s Thesis (30 credits).
The study program is divided into mandatory and elective modules, which combine lectures, exercises, excursions, work placements, seminars, and projects. Continuous assessment will take place in each module.
In view of the vast scope of the topics covered, five areas of specialization are offered, which reflect the convergence and interaction of the different disciplines:
  • Architecture, city and landscape
  • Building services engineering and renewable energies
  • Building physics and energy efficiency
  • Building technology and life cycle engineering
  • Real estate development, value assessment and life cycles
