Description of course of studies

Agriculture and horticulture are a foundation for modern civilization, an important cultural asset and a key economic driver. At the Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan we strongly believe that strong academic training and research in this field are necessary to provide a lasting future.

Our undergraduate course in agricultural and horticultural sciences will give you the well-rounded education necessary for a career in this area. A broad range of subjects concerning the natural sciences, animal husbandry, plant cultivation, economics and agricultural engineering will appeal to students interested in the practical aspects of agriculture and related industries as well as students interested in scientific research.

Three semesters of introductory and fundamental classes are followed by further three semesters allowing for diversification according to individual interests. The third semester is unique to our program: It is taught through a modular system in which combinations of selected classes are combined to focus on one particular subject at a time. For example three weeks of animal husbandry systems incorporate ethology, nutrition, and the raising of animals. Finally one module gives students the oportunity for initial research in small groups at a very early stage. Great emphasis is also placed on developing key qualifications such as problem solving, team work, and communication. Before graduating every student is required to write their own bachelor’s thesis.

This curriculum is complemented by set of further oportunities: Hands on laboratory work, for example in botany, chemistry or microbiology. Various excursions throughout Germany and various other countries, for example Romania. Last but not least a carefully fashioned internship program according to your goals providing you with initial practical experience.

This bachelor’s degree provides you with various career options: Students have chosen jobs as diverse as agricultural consulting, research in for example phytopathology or plantbreeding and economics, just to name a few. Nevertheless the TU München strongly encourages its students to continue education at graduate level – therefore every successful student is offered consecutive graduate studies. Possible programs are offered in agricultural sciences, renewable resources, horticultural sciences and coming soon agricultural management, as well. Since you will have completed the common basic curriculum in Weihenstephan, you may even opt to apply for graduate education at a different faculty, for example Biology or Consumer Economics.
