Description of course of studies

The physician serves the health of individual persons and of the nation as a whole. The medical profession is not a trade, but by its very nature a calling." (Section 1, Federal Medical Act). The medical profession requires physical and mental strength on the part of its practitioners and a pronounced wish to help. Further indispensable requirements include conscientiousness, a strongly developed sense of responsibility, and the ability to make quick decisions under considerable time pressure. Physicians also have to accept the fact that the profession generally does not allow for regular hours. Long hours of duty under great nervous strain, and emergency and stand-by duty involving frequent night calls are the norm for many physicians in private practice (such as general practitioners and paediatricians) and for most hospital doctors. Thanks to the growing insight that prevention is often better than cure, much medical work is now concerned with prophylactic measures (primary prevention) and the early recognition of disease (secondary prevention). Physicians find employment in the following areas: - private practice - hospital service - public health authorities - social services - welfare authorities - labour offices - works medical services - armed forces - police forces - penal institutions - scientific institutes - industry research, for example in the pharmaceutical industry.

Major fields of study

The course does not offer major subjects, but provides uniform studies in human medicine.
