Description of course of studies

The Landscape Planning, Ecology and Conservation master's program offers in-depth and expanded scientific know-how to students with landscape planning and conservation educational credentials. The program is especially suited for TUM graduates with Landscape Architecture and Planning bachelor's degrees that focus on landscape planning, as well as for students with comparable degrees from other German universities and foreign institutes of higher education.

Different approaches to land usage, climate change and urbanization, as well as evolving societies and demographic shifts are leading to rapid landscape changes on a regional and global scale. For this reason, the steps to completing a scientific course of study in conservation and planning involve an understanding of natural sciences and ecological processes, evaluating changes against the backdrop of general principles in environmental and conservation studies, and the creation of innovative methods and strategies for the sustainable development of landscapes, including natural resources and biological diversity.

This master's program consists of three closely-related central, areas:
  • Planning and development of natural and culturally-impacted landscapes, including urban spaces.
  • Landscape ecology, an area characterized by scientific analysis and theoretical reflection that serves as the scientific foundation for planning-based action and conservation.
  • Protection and restoration of biological diversity and the productivity of the ecosystem.

Graduates will be able to use their sound knowledge of ecology and planning skills to independently develop and implement goals, strategies and projects in the areas of research and applied conservation with a critical eye. Students of the program can specialize in landscape planning, landscape ecology and renaturalization ecology.
