LMU and TUM signed an agreement in March 2003 to collaborate on research and course offerings in the field of geosciences. The newly created bachelor’s degree programme, which started in winter semester 2003/2004 is centered in the recently founded “GeoZentrum München.” There is no minimum grade point average required for application. Compared to the traditional German “Diplom” with its emphasis on theoretical knowledge, the new bachelor’s degree program focuses more heavily on applied skills, qualifying graduates for a wider range of professional opportunities. Students can go on to complete a master of science degree, which is equivalent to the traditional German “Diplom.” The responsibilities facing geoscientists in today’s society require on average 5 years of postgraduate study. This is confirmed by current developments in English-speaking education systems. Students are selected on the basis of their ability and intentions to complete a master’s degree. By introducing bachelor’s degrees, the full course of study is divided into shorter segments enabling and promoting national and international exchanges with other universities. All examination results are calculated according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), simplifying university exchanges and transfers. A bachelor’s degree consists of 6 semesters of study and is followed by a master’s degree of 4 consecutive semesters including a master’s thesis (according to an agreement among the nine German “technischen Universitäten,” T-9. The six-semester bachelor’s degree program is divided into two segments: four semesters of basic course work and two semesters of specialisation. Courses in the first segment cover all areas of geosciences such as mineralogy or geology as well as the relevant natural sciences. The second segment contains more advanced course work in one of the areas of specialisation-- geology, geophysics, or mineralogy. By selecting appropriate courses it is possible to work towards a subsequent master’s degree such as the master’s degree in engineering and hydrogeology.Curriculum (link)
