Description of course of studies

The international Master of Science in Cartography was established in 2011 and is a joint program of Technische Universität München (TUM), Vienna University of Technology (TUW), Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) and University of Twente (UT).

With a very high concentration of scientific competence in cartography and cartography-related fields, the program is outstanding worldwide. The Master of Science in Cartography in completely taught in English.

The Cartography program has been selected for the Erasmus+ scholarship program ‘Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree‘ of the European Union in October 2014. Therefore, highly remunerated scholarships might be awarded to the best students.

Through the cooperation of four leading universities in the field of cartography the combined comprehensive expertise enables a unique curriculum and provides an exceptional program with excellent job employment prospects. The program focuses on a broad education in cartography and geoinformatics, e.g., on spatial information technologies, mathematic principles of map making, spatial data handling, theories and technologies of geovisualization, visual analytics and communication of spatial information. The Cartography program aims to educate students to become future engineers in cartography and to prepare them either for a career in the scientific or in the industrial field of cartography. A main goal of the Master of Science in Cartography is to spearhead the cartographic research not only in Europe but also worldwide. Thanks to the strategic partnership of the cooperating universities, innovative standards in international cartography education and research shall be set. Furthermore, the program improves the exchange of students and scientists worldwide.

The program is open to everybody who is interested from all over the world with a bachelor degree or its equivalent in science or engineering, e.g. cartography, geography, geodesy or computer science.

Major fields of study

The program takes place at all cooperating universities and is conceptualized with a fixed structure. Students stay together as a group during the whole time and have to spend their 1st semester at TUM in Germany. Then they have to study the 2nd semester at TUW in Austria. After that they study their 3rd semester at TUD in Germany. During the 4th semester students prepare their Master’s thesis at one of the four participating universities.

The full-time Master program awards a total of 120 ECTS and is to be completed in two years. Students obtain 30 ECTS in each semester/at each university, respectively 30 ECTS for their Master’s thesis. The qualification finally awarded to the students is the joint degree “Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Cartography” issued by the TUM, TUW, TUD and UT together.

Application and admission



Application period for winter semester: 01.01. - 31.05.
Our online application portal TUMonline will create a checklist with documents you have to hand in. The checklist shows which documents you need for admission and for enrollment.

You must submit the signed application form and all documents you need for admission before the application deadline, i.e. before 31.05. If individual documents for admission are not available up to that date, you can hand them in until 15.08.

You must submit all documents you need for enrollment before 15.09. If individual documents for enrollment are not available at that date, you can hand them in up to five weeks after the start of the lecture period. However, we recommend that you submit all required documents well before the semester begins, as you will not be enrolled until all documents have been received.

  • Letter of motivation
  • Officially certified copy of bachelor degree or its equivalent in engineering, natural science or a related field (e.g.: cartography, geodesy, geoinformation, informatics, geography, geosciences, etc.)
  • Officially certified copy of complete university transcript of records
  • If English is not your native language nor the language of tuition of your previous course of study, at least one of the following proofs : TOEFL , IELTS or Cambridge main suit
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • if applicable certificate of professional education and experience

Application documents (International students)

In addition to the documents listed above, APS Certificate (Chinese, Mongolian and Vietnamese applicants only) are required. If the documents are not in English or in German, officially authenticated translations must be added.
