Fee exemption options
In the §§ 4 and 5 of the Tuition Regulation all possible reasons for exemptions are listed.
The Bavarian Ministry of Science, Research and Art provides information on course fee exemption and on the most frequently asked questions.
Current information
- "One Child" regulation:
- As of the winter semester 2009/2010, the so-called '"One Child" regulation' applies. Based on an amendment to the Bavarian Higher Education Act of July 1, 2009, students can be exempted from paying course fees if their maintenance debtor (generally speaking the parents) already pays maintenance for another child enrolled at a German university and for whom course fees are paid. Course fees paid in a member state of the European Union are regarded as equivalent. (for further details please consult the actual wording of the law in the Tuition Regulation § 5!)
- A further improvement for students has been introduced for students raising their own child. The age limit applicable for fee exemption has been raised from 10 to 18 years.
- Age limit in families with three or more children:
- Students whose parents receive child benefit for three or more children are exempt from course fees. Up to now the age limit for siblings was 25 (child benefit age limit for children in education).
- This ruling has now been extended: if one or more children in the family are still in education after payment of child benefit has ended but have not yet reached the age of 27, the student is also exempted from paying course fees. (for further details please consult the actual wording of the law in the Tuition Regulation § 5!)
