German as a Foreign Language

Semester Courses
During the regular semester, the Language Center offers German courses at all levels defined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to students, doctoral candidates, and visiting scholars of the Technische Universität München. A placement test can be taken online at the e-learning platform of the TUM, available at www.elearning.tum.de. Those interested in the courses can log in to the platform via TUMonline, complete the online-test, and then register for a course at the appropriate level. Information about the various course offerings can be found under TUMonline. You may also check the current course program.
Fee-based Intensive Courses during the Semester Break
The intensive courses offered during the spring and fall semester breaks consist of 60 hours and are equal to a semester course of four weeks' duration. This offer is meant primarily for students and employees of TUM. The fee is 200 Euros. Those wishing to participate should personally register at the secretary's office (Munich campus, room 0172a). The placement test can be taken online at www.elearning.tum.de or the applicant can take it in person at the Language Center.

Spring course in February: The course lasts five weeks. It meets three times a week between 17:00 and 20:30. You may also check the current course program.

Fall course in October: This course lasts two weeks. It meets the whole day during the first week, and in the mornings during the second week. You may also check the current course program.
German Courses of the International Office
In preparation for studying at TUM, the International Office offers a pre-study course every September. It includes all the content of a comprehensive language class. The course gives you a chance not only to learn German, but to get acquainted with German science, culture and campus life. The Various Summer and Winter University programs also include language classes. You can find additional info here.
TestDaF-DSH-Language Certificates
International applicants - except for those who have been admitted to special programs - need proof of German competency, for example DSH level 2 or 3 or TestDaF level 4, to participate in courses which are not offered in English. TUM does not offer any courses to prepare students for these exams. Certified TestDaF examination centers can be found worldwide at TestDaF-Institut. In Munich, the DSH exam can be taken at the Ludwig-Maximilians University and at the Hochschule München.
Students of the TUM who need a language certificate, for example for DAAD, can take a language test at the Language Center. Please contact your DaF lecturer for more information.
