CHANGING SUBJECTS OF COURSES OF STUDY
In principle, changing subjects or courses of study is only possible
at the beginning of a semester. When you apply for the first semester
in a course of study with unrestricted admissions or a course of study with numerus clausus , you need to submit an application. If you apply for a course of study requiring an aptitude test , you need to apply for an aptitude test (cp. application for a university place).
This
means, that the same admissions and selection criteria apply to you, as
to those students, who did not study yet. This is why the deadline for
applications is July, 15th or January 15th (only for students not
studying in their first semester).
Caution: The semesters you studied until now are not considered waiting-time, if you now apply for a course of studies with restricted admissions.
How to get credit for academic work done previously
- Applying for a higher semester:
submit your application (aptitude test if required) together with the approval certificate issued by the pre-degree examination committee. The examination committee of the department for the newly chosen course of studies decides, if and for which semester you can enroll. - Applying for the first semester
After enrolling, you can get individual credits approved by the examination committee of the new course of studies.
If you already are a student at TUM, you can apply for a change in study course without having to exmatriculate first. However, if you are studying at another university, you need to submit the exmatriculation certificate when personally registering! Please note that it is not sufficient to present a degree certificate (e.g. diploma of technical college) in order to prove exmatriculation, but that a document needs to be submitted proving the exmatriculation from the previously attended school!
Special advice: there can be many reasons for changing subjects. It can be the right consequence if, for example, selection of study course was not well prepared or if, in the meantime, the student has changed interests. Most of all, changing subjects needs not be a catastrophe.
In any case, it is advisable to seek information on the technical, formal or social etc. implications and the necessary steps to be taken before and after changing subjects. Often it is interesting to consider the question, which problems can be solved by changing a study course and which obstacles can not be avoided by a change.
If you would like to discuss the interdisciplinary aspects in connection with a subject change, the central student advisory service or the advisors of the respective departments can be your first contact.
