The StudentCard is the student’s identity card at TUM.

  •  Student’s identity card (with photo)
  •  Library identity card (bar code on the back)
  •  Student services electronic payment card (e.g. for the refectory, cafeteria)
      •  payment in refectories, canteens and nearly all cafeterias and espresso bars
      •  payment for most beverage, snack and ice-cream vending machines
      • deposit for bottles or dishes

Student services facilities at the Technical University of Munich must be involved in any case!
The StudentCard functions without contact, i.e. it only has to be held close to the reading device for reading, crediting and debiting.

      Please note:
Interference may occur if several cards with payment functions are located in the same purse!

Purchasing the StudentCard

An official photo identity card (e.g. identity card, passport)
If another person is to pick up your StudentCard he/she has to bring his/hern own identity card and an authorization. Please use this form.
  • Advanced semester students who have not yet received a StudentCard may apply for one with a request form.
  • The initially issued StudentCard is free of charge.
  • Please check to make certain that the imprinted data is correct. Please report any errors to the Registrar’s Office.
Validation

Before you can use the StudentCard for the first time you must validate it at one of the stations made available.

  • Validation is required

    • following successful enrollment
    • and after every (successful) renewal of matriculation
  • Validation deletes the information strip (TRW strip) on the front of the card and reprints it with the current validity date. The new validity date is also replaced in the chip.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Extension of the validity date is not possible as long as there has been no renewal of matriculation, i.e. the TUM has not received the semester fees.

  • Validation procedure:
  • 1. Insert the card into the slot of the validation printer as shown on the display. The display of the validating device indicates the direction in which you have to insert the card. If you accidentally insert the card in the wrong direction, then simply wait until the machine completely releases your card again.

    2. During the write operation your StudentCard is drawn in twice by the system. It is imperative that you wait until this operation has been completed and do not try to pull the card out of the machine by force!

    3. Please remove the card only after the audio signal.

  • Validation Station Locations:
      • TUM Main Campus
You can find two validating stations on the ground floor installed on the left and right of the staircase to the library at the university’s main campus, located at Arcis Strasse 21 in 80333 Munich.
      • Garching Campus
At the Garching Campus you can find two validating stations near the entrance to the Mechanical Engineering Department, behind a column next to the lockers on the left. You can find two other stations near the entrance to the Computer Science Department in a wall recess on the left (past the cafeteria and the toilets).
      • Olympiapark Campus
At the Olympiapark Campus you can find a validating station across from the Cafeteria next to the "Geräteausgabe".
      • Weihenstephan Science Center
The station in Weihenstephan is installed in the staircase near the post office.
    Upgrades

The StudentCard can be recharged on a Student Services card charger.

    • In the entrance hall of the refectory located at Arcis Strasse 17 you can find an EC card charger where you can transfer amounts to your payment card by using your Eurocheque or EC card.
    • Additional cash chargers are available in all of the refectories and cafeterias operated by Student Services within the area of the Technical University of Munich as well as at the increasingly number of touch vending machines (combination of hot beverage dispenser and snack vendor).
    The StudentCard can be upgraded with 5 €,10 €, 20 € and 50 € cash notes.

    Safekeeping

We recommend that you treat your StudentCard with care in order to ensure that you will be able to use the StudentCard for a long time.

    Thus you should avoid:
      • bending the StudentCard (contact wear and antenna breakage) slight continuous curvature (problems with printing the data on the TRW strip during validation)
      • chemical influences (e.g. washing or contact with other liquids)
      • high temperatures
      • heavy soiling of the Studentcard
      • storage near an EC card
In order to protect the StudentCard against damage, you should keep it in a protective plastic cover.
You can usually get such protective plastic covers from your bank free of charge.
    Loss and Theft

In order to prevent misuse of your card (e.g. in libraries), please report loss or theft of your StudentCard to the Registrar’s Office immediately and have the library number deactivated in one of the libraries.

PLEASE NOTE: The Registrar’s Office does not notify the library about losses or theft!

If the StudentCard is reissued, a new library number will be assigned by the Registrar’s Office and then communicated to the library.

    • Reissue in Case of Loss and/or Negligent Damage:
      • A fee in the amount of 30 € will be charged in the case of loss and/or negligent damage of the StudentCard.

During the business hours of the cashier's office (Room 1157): Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon students are required to pay the fee due and submit the corresponding receipt to the Registrar’s Office.

Outside of the business hours of the cashier's office students are required to pay the fee directly to the Registrar’s Office.

    • Reissue in the Case of Theft
      • In the event that the Studentcard is stolen it is imperative that you submit a police theft complaint in which the StudentCard is clearly indicated.

In this case reissue is free of charge.

Without a police theft complaint a fee in the amount of 30 € shall be due.

Please contact the Registrar’s Office if you have any additional questions concerning the StudentCard.
