EXMATRICULATION
There can be several reasons for exmatriculation. The most important or most common reasons are explained below:
1. Legal basis
The legal basis for exmatriculation is laid down in para. 12, 13 and 14 of “Statutes governing Enrollment, Re-Enrollment, Leave of Absence and Dematriculation“ of Technische Universität München in connection with article 65 of “Bayerisches Hochschulgesetz“.
All possible reasons for exmatriculation are listed in article 65 of “Bayerisches Hochschulgesetz“.
2. Important/ common reasons for exmatriculation
The most common reasons for exmatriculation are:
- request by the student after passing the final examinations,
- definitely failing an examination that is required for the pre-degree, intermediate or the final examination according to examination regulations or if the student definitely cannot procure the prerequisites needed for one of those examinations for reasons the student is responsible for,
- if the student failed to register in due time for continuation of studies in the next semester.
2.1 Exmatriculation upon request
- If the student submits a request for exmatriculation, this request is to be complied with.
- If requesting exmatriculation within five weeks after the beginning of the university session, exmatriculation is in effect on the day the request was submitted.
- If the request is filed later, exmatriculation is only possible at the end of the current semester.
- Only in exceptional cases, e.g. if being admitted to another course of study with restricted admissions after moving up in the waiting list, the exmatriculation can be effected for the day the request was filed, even after expiration of the five weeks after beginning of the university session.

2.2 Exmatriculation because of passing final examinations
- A student is exmatriculated at the end of the semester in which she/ he passed all final examinations.
- The exmatriculation is in effect by virtue of the law, i.e.the student is “automatically“ exmatriculated when passing final examinations.
- The decisive point in time is the day on which all academic achievements have been rendered, i.e. the day the last exam has been successfully taken.
- If the student‘s last academic achievement consisted in a thesis, the student is exmatriculated at the end of the semester the thesis was handed in. This is independent from the point in time when the thesis will be evaluated, when the last examination session took place or when the diploma will be handed to the student.
- Please note that in indivudual cases exmatriculation then can be in effect retroactively.
2.3 Exmatriculation because of definitely not passing
- A student has to be exmatriculated “ex officio“ if definitely failing an examination that is required for the pre-degree, intermediate or the final examination according to examination regulations or if the student definitely cannot procure the prerequisites needed for one of those examinations for reasons the student is responsible for.
- In this case, exmatriculation is effected “ex officio“, i.e. the university has to pronounce the exmatriculation - without further actions by the student.
- The exmatriculation is a consequence of definitely not passing and will be pronounced at the same time as the respective examination certificate is issued. It is in effect upon entry/ delivery.
2.4 Exmatriculation because of failure to renew registration in due time
- A student is to be exmatriculated if failing to renew registration in due time according to the terms in para. 9 of “Statutes governing Enrollment, Re-Enrollment, Leave of Absence and Dematriculation“ of Technische Universität München.
- The exmatriculation will be pronounced “ex officio“ and will be in effect, at the earliest, at the end of the current semester.
3. Legal consequences
- Upon exmatriculation the student is no longer a member of the university and basically loses all rights and duties (connected to the student status).
- The student basically loses the right to partake in examinations (for exceptions see below).
- Important: this is not valid for examinations that are to be retaken, because exmatriculation does not affect the time limits prescribed for retaking exams.
- Moreover, examination regulations possibly may require the student to take an exam for which the student registered before exmatriculation.
4. Procedure
- The application for exmatriculation has to submitted to the admissions office or the administrative office “Weihenstephan“ of Technische Universität München by means of a form.
- The student ID needs to be included in the application.
- If the exmatriculation is effected by virtue of the law or “ex officio“ the student has to hand in her/ his student ID without delay upon request of the university.
- If exmatriculation is “ex officio“, the student receives a notification with instruction on right to appeal by Technische Universität München. In addition, she/ he receives a written confirmation of exmatriculation.
