Sitemap Studies Application Modes of admission

MODES OF ADMISSION

Each course of study has a pre-assigned allocation procedure. TUM has the following modes of admission:

  • Unrestricted admissions:

Applicants applying for courses of study with unrestricted admissions are guaranteed to be admitted to the university to persue this course of study if application deadlines are met and qualification prerequisites are furnished.

  • Local numerus clausus:

Allocation criteria for “NC“ (“numerus clausus“) courses are grade point average of final secondary-school examinations (“Abiturdurchschnittsnote“) and waiting time (“Wartezeit“). Each term after the final secondary-school examinations (“Abitur“) that one has not been enrolled in a German university or technical college is considered waiting time (number of terms enrolled at a German university or technical college are substracted). Time spent enrolled as a guest student and time spent studying abroad is considered waiting time. In order to obtain waiting time it is not necessary to apply again each term.

How can I find out whether my grade point average of final secondary-school examinations (“Abiturnote“) or the waiting time spent after final secondary-school examinations is sufficient for admission to the university?

Last year‘s results can only be an indication. Caution: it is not possible to forecast the NC. It is an equation with several unknowns: the number of university places to be allocated, the number of applicants and their allocation criteria (grade point average of final secondary-school examinations and waiting time) change with each admissions process.

  • Aptitude tests:

At TUM aptitude tests are conducted for the majority of study courses. Several criteria are used in the selection of students: grade point average of final secondary-school examinations (“Abitur“), motivational letters and possibly hands-on experience in connection with the planned course of study as well as, in some cases, an interview with the admissions committee.

This interview is not an exam. It is an interview designed to find out whether it can be expected that the applicant will master his/ her studies successfully.

At the overview on courses of study you can find the various modes of admission.
