HEALTH INSURANCE

In Germany, all students must have health insurance, i.e. you must have proof of sufficient insurance in order to be able to enrol at a German university. It is important that you go about obtaining this proof of medical coverage will before your arrival at TUM approaches. It is not sufficient to present proof of insurance from your home country (e.g. insurance card or insurance policy; see point 2) and travel insurances are not accepted.

How to enroll online and register yourself to a state and state regulated Health insurance service provider.

1. Students originating from countries in the European Union (EU)/EWR nations must send the International Health Insurance Certification (former E111 or E128)or a copie of the EHIC-Card to one of the social state insurers (e.g. AOK, Techniker Krankenkasse, Barmer, DAK, etc.) in Germany sometimes together with a form (e.g. for the AOK). Following the insurer will send you and the TUM a confirmation about your insurance. Doctors will directly charge insurers for treatment expenses.
2. Students originating from countries outside the EU, who are insured in their home country
   • and with which Germany has a social insurance treaty (former Yugoslavian states,Switzerland,Turkey, Tunisia) must also present a certificate of of their health insurance to one of the social state insurers in Germany.
   • All other students who are insured in their home country can be released from the German health insurance requirement.
     NOTE:
     This release from the insurance requirement cannot be withdrawn and is valid for the entire time of study. We would discourage you from this release since most other countries do not have the same insurance coverage as Germany. For the application a certified translation of the insurance policy from your home country must be presented to one of the national health insurance providers at your place of study or residence. Students released from the insurance requirement are not insured in Germany and must then pay all medical bills themselves. Students must arrange in advance for reimbursement of these potentially high medical costs from their home health insurer. In addition, the Foreigner`s Registration Authority will required German health insurance, and this is seldom the case. Otherwise your visa may not be issued. For more information about possible disadvantages contact one of the national health insurance providers.

In both cases please hold on the description you can find under point 1! 

3. Students who are not insured in their home country , obtain German insurance through a health insurer of their choice (see above). Forms can be found on the websites of the German insurers, so that a confirmation about a German insurance to study at an university can be send to TUM in advance. Costs: Student rates are currently about € 65-66 (as of 2010) per month (please note: from April 1st, 2011 the rates will raise to about € 76-78).
   All national health insurance providers have the same monthly rates, but it is worthwhile to compare the services and payment options offered by different companies.

   Students exempted from the health insurance requirement:

   Students above (and including) the age of 30 and those who have studied for more than 13 semesters are exempt from the health insurane requirement. However, all international students must have medical insurance coverage, i.e. they must purchase insurance from a private insurance company. There a special arrangements for various EU-Nations.
