Living in Munich
One of TUM's main advantages is its location. There are many reasons for this:
The historic, relatively intact "Old Town" city centre with its numerous monuments and restaurants, the wealth of cultural amenities and, of course, its proximity to the Alps. There are more than 84,000 students enrolled at Munich's 11 universities and colleges who can use the 7 large libraries, 49 public libraries and 45 museums to add to their knowledge. For evening entertainment, there are 42 theatres, 3 opera houses, 3 world famous orchestras and nearly 90 cinemas to choose from.
Ever since the 1972 Olympic Games and the 1974 and 2006 World Cup were held here, Munich has also achieved worldwide renown as the "City of Athletics". It was not only the many extra sports facilities that the Olympic Games brought to Munich and which are now available for students' use, but also its underground railway (U-Bahn) system. The continual expansion of the underground network, which is nowadays regarded as one of the best in Europe, is an ongoing process. Munich's appeal has moreover enticed many firms into moving here.
Over the course of time, the former royal residence town has developed to become Germany's leading business metropolis. Our students are fortunate in that they can not only obtain work experience but also, at a later stage, permanent employment at such well-known companies as BMW, SIEMENS and EADS. Despite the current economic crisis, Munich has also succeeded in taking the lead in the booming microelectronics sector thanks to the 2,500 local specialist companies with their cutting-edge technology.
With a population of 1.3 million, Munich is the third largest city in Germany (behind Berlin and Hamburg) and has something to suit all tastes. So there is a lot more to discover in Munich than the clichéd image of the "cosy city" on the River Isar might suggest.
