ACCoMMODATION situation in München
It may be difficult to find a room in Munich – especially at the start of the winter term during the months of October and November. The majority of Munich's roughly 85,000 students live in private rooms, flat shares or apartments. Only about 13% live in halls of residence. Instead of belonging to the universities, student halls in Germany are run by the Studentenwerk, or sometimes by public or private funding bodies. Bookings have to be made directly with the halls of residence. Depending on the student hall concerned, there is a waiting time of 1-4 semesters. Rooms are raffled by the Studentenwerk at the beginning of each term. Further details are given on the homepage of the Studentenwerk Studentenwerk München. The average rent for a sublet room is about 300 €. Rooms in flat shares and apartments cost between 350 and 600 €, depending on the location and the facilities/furnishings. Rooms in halls of residence cost between 280 and 360 €. Your best asset when flat or room-hunting is patience. Looking for a room in winter can take several months.
Anyone who wishes to rent a room in a hall of residence without delay can apply for a so-called service package. This does not apply for exchange students or Master's students on TUM courses held in English but only for full-time students. We offer exchange students and those doing English-medium courses other options.
