Landschaften neu entdecken - im Deutschen Museum
Sonderausstellung „LandschafftRessourcen“ im Deutschen Museum
Wie wirken sich Landschaftseingriffe aus und wo stecken Konfliktpotenziale? Welche Ressourcen sind knapp und wie kann Landnutzung dazu beitragen, Ressourcen nachhaltig zu bewirtschaften? Die Wanderausstellung „LandschafftRessourcen“ geht diesen Fragen auf den Grund und zeigt aktuelle Erkenntnisse und Lösungsansätze aus der Forschung. Bis zum 1. April 2012 ist die Ausstellung im Deutschen Museum in München zu Gast. Die Technische Universität München ist Kooperationspartnerin der Ausstellung.

A graphene sheet overstretches the small gap between two metalic contacts
Ultra-fast photodetector and terahertz generator
Extremely thin, more stable than steel and widely applicable: the material graphene is full of interesting properties. As such, it is currently the shining star among the electric conductors. Photodetectors made with graphene can process and conduct both light signals and electric signals extremely fast. Upon optical stimulation, graphene generates a photocurrent within picoseconds (0,000 000 000 001 second). Until now, none of the available methods were fast enough to measure these processes in graphene. Professor Alexander Holleitner and Dr. Leonhard Prechtel, scientists at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM), have now developed a method to measure the temporal dynamics of this photo current.

High performance computer at LRZ - Picture: LRZ
Software Development in High Performance Computing
The German Research Foundation (DFG) regards the redesign of software development in high performance computing as one of the main future challenges. Thus the DFG is first starting the priority program “Software for Exascale Computing (SPPEXA)” from the strategy fund. TUM informatics professor Hans-Joachim Bungartz from the Chair of Scientific Computing promoted the project and is presently one of the coordinators. SPPEXA is based on a 6 year time frame with a budget amount of 24 million euros.

TU München trauert um Ehrensenator Helmut Karl
Die Technische Universität München (TUM) betrauert den Tod ihres Ehrensenators und Garchinger Altbürgermeisters Helmut Karl, der am 19. Januar 2012 im Alter von 74 Jahren verstorben ist. Helmut Karl hat sich in besonderem Maß um den Garchinger Forschungsstandort der TUM verdient gemacht.

TUM richtet drei neue Stiftungslehrstühle ein
Die Technische Universität München (TUM) hat mit der Unterstützung von Stiftern drei neue Lehrstühle eingerichtet. Die BayWa AG ermöglicht den Lehrstuhl Governance im internationalen Agribusiness, die Infineon Technologies AG stiftet die Professur für Leistungselektronische Systeme, das Deutsche Institut für Vertrauen und Sicherheit im Internet (DI.VSI) den Lehrstuhl für Cyber Trust. „Die Kooperationen zeugen vom Vertrauen in die TUM, Forschung und Ausbildung in diesen wichtigen Zukunftsfeldern zugunsten des gesellschaftlichen Fortschritts voranzubringen“, sagt TUM-Präsident Wolfgang A. Herrmann.

Avalanche of reactions at the origin of life
The origin of life is seen as the formation of the first biomolecules capable of multiplication and further development. Until now it was unclear which reactions may have triggered the evolution of this ur-metabolism. Scientists at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) have now revealed mechanisms by which a few biomolecules may bring forth new products in a kind of avalanche to initiate a self-expanding metabolism. „Chemistry – A European Journal“ now published their results.

TUM und Stadtwerke München starten Center for Energy Markets
Die Technische Universität München (TUM) legt einen neuen Schwerpunkt auf Forschung und Lehre im Energiemärkte-Management. Mit Unterstützung der Stadtwerke München GmbH (SWM) hat sie deshalb heute das Center for Energy Markets (CEM) gegründet. Die Kooperationspartner wollen die sich wandelnde Energiewirtschaft interdisziplinär analysieren und zur exzellenten Ausbildung von Experten in diesem Zukunftsfeld beitragen.

Energy saving chaperone Hsp90
A special group of proteins, the so-called chaperones, helps other proteins to obtain their correct conformation. Until now scientists supposed that hydrolyzing ATP provides the energy for the large conformational changes of chaperone Hsp90. Now a research team from the Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) could prove that Hsp90 utilizes thermal fluctuations as the driving force for its conformational changes. The renowned journal PNAS reports on their findings.

Emissionshandel reicht für Energiewende nicht aus
Der europäische Handel mit Emissionszertifikaten allein wird in Deutschland nicht zu Investitionen in erneuerbare Energien führen. Nur mit ergänzenden Förderprogrammen werden die Energieunternehmen ihren Anlagenpark umstellen. Für eine Verdrängung der Kohleverstromung aber bleiben dann zu viele Zertifikate auf dem Markt. Zu diesen Ergebnissen kommt eine Studie der Technischen Universität München (TUM), die verschiedene Szenarien der Strom- und Wärmeproduktion bis zum Jahr 2020 modelliert hat. So gut wie gar keinen Einfluss hätte der Emissionshandel ohne den Ausstieg aus der Kernkraft.

Fish oil during pregnancy does not protect against excessive adipose tissue development
Is obesity in infants “programmed” in the womb? Previously, researchers assumed that consumption of “bad” fats during pregnancy contribute to excessive infant adipose tissue growth and that “good” Omega 3 fatty acids prevent expansive adipose tissue development. An intervention study run by the Technische Universität München (TUM) showed no evidence to support this “perinatal programming” theory. Expectant mothers increased their intake of Omega 3 fatty acids with fish oil capsules and fish-based meals during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This intervention diet did not have any discernable effect on the fat mass of the offspring. At 12 months, the babies were as rotund or slim as the children in the control group.
