CM@TUM – Introduction of the campus management system TUMonline
CM@TUM is the name of the project coordinating the full-scale introduction of the new campus management system TUMONLINE at TU München.
Background
The introduction of TUMonline is a result of the "Bologna Process" initiated in 1999 which aims to create a common European Higher Education Area. The process involves fundamental changes in university structures and core processes, such as the introduction of Bachelor and Masters courses. At the same time, increasing internationalization, growing competition between universities and increasing numbers of applicants and students have result in significant upheaval within German and European higher education.
This development requires an adaptation of the entire field of study and teaching at TU München to the changing conditions - a huge task in view of the institution's 23,000 students, approx. 6,000 staff and 130 courses of study. Since the existing IT infrastructure does not do justice to these complex requirements, the switch to an all-encompassing campus management system is inevitable.
At the end of 2007 the decision was taken to adopt the web-based information management system CAMPUSonline of TU Graz. In January 2008 a cooperation agreement was concluded with the goal of introducing CAMPUSonline at TU München under the name of TUMonline.
Project goals
The aim of the project is to introduce TUMonline in order to create an integrated, comprehensive solution for all administrative processes in the field of study and teaching. The main sub-goals include the following:
- the creation of a consistent and current database for all processes
- the integration of all study-related processes at TU München
- the provision of online services for all those involved in higher education, geared towards specific target groups.
Project organization
The high level of complexity of the project requires efficient project organization. The most important organizational units include the following:
- the coordinating project bureau
- six sub-projects working in close collaboration with the project team in Graz
- the advisory expert committee
- several sub-project advisory expert committees
- the IT Service Center and the Leibniz Computing Center for technical support
First steps
A period of 18 months has been designated for the start-up project CM@TUM, running from the start of the project at the beginning of 2008 and including the creation of a pre-operational system by the end of 2008 and the step-by-step introduction of an operational system in 2009.
- The first application to be completed is an online application procedure which has been operational since July 2008.
- Since the winter semester 2008/09, examination administration has been progressively switched to TUMonline in the various faculties.
- Other functions of TUMonline will be rolled out in 2009, including course and module management.
- Parallel to this, IT systems currently in use such as HISSOS, HISPOS, FlexNow and UnivIS will be replaced.
