Entrance and residence regulations in Munich

    Health insurance

  • Scholarship holders or self-financed candidates
    1. Please insure yourself at a private health insurance (please also read the information given by EURAXESS).
    2. After you have been insured at a private health insurance company, you need to present your insurance policy documents to one of the compulsory health insurance companies in Germany (please also read the information given by EURAXESS).
    3. You will then receive a document (so-called "Befreiung") for your residence permit and matriculation purposes, which will exempt you of paying a premium into a public German health insurance company.
Information regarding prices and the coverage can be found online.
Feel free to get in contact with us should you need support with the content of any important letters.
Exception: if you can provide proof that you have been insured by a public German health insurance provider for at least the past 12 months without interruption, then you can apply for a voluntary continuation within a public insurance. Similar conditions apply for EU citizens regarding their public health insurance back at home, please contact the insurance company for information concerning your individual situation.
Attention: bear in mind, that all pre-contract diseases will not be covered by the private insurance, so please communicate these to the insurance company in order to include them in the contract and ensure that the insurance covers the expenses in case of illness
Additionally: you also have the possibility to insure yourself through your home country (not recommended for long-term stays). In this case, you will need to present your insurance certificate (in English or German and if needed certified) to one of the public insurances in Germany in order to receive a document, so-called “Befreiung”. You will need to pay all medical service costs in advance and will then become the refund from your insurance. Regarding your Visa, you will need to provide proof, that your home country insurance company will cover all (100%) medical service charges required by the German regulations and is therefore equivalent to the German insurances. Please contact the health insurance and the Foreigners Registration Authority beforehand in order to check if this possibility applies for you.

  • Doctoral candidates employed within or outside of TUM with a monthly income over 400€
    1. You can insure yourself through a public health insurance (please also read the information given by EURAXESS).
    2. Should you be employed at TUM, please send a confirmation / evidence of your health insurance to the human resources department, otherwise you will automatically be insured within the AOK.

  • Doctoral candidates with a health insurance valid for the entire EU
    1. Please go to one of the public health insurances (please also read the information given by EURAXESS) and provide documentary evidence (in English or German, if needed certified) that your cover is valid for the whole of Europe. The insurance policy cover will be verified. Should your policy fail to cover the minimum requirements, you will have to insure yourself privately (in case that you are not employed). Feel free to get in contact with us should you need support with the content of any important letters.

    Important for all:
    • Please note, that in Germany, being covered by health insurance is compulsory, meaning that you have the legal obligation to be insured at all times. Therefore, please ensure that all eventualities between your arrival in Germany and your registration with the local health insurance provider are covered.
    • Being enrolled / matriculated at TUM as a doctoral candidate does not entitle you to a “student rate”. Please state your status clearly (doctorate).
    • Should you be over 30 years of age, you do not have to show the above mentioned "Befreiung" anymore. You can keep your domestic health insurance if desired, by providing proof that your domestic health insurance is equivalent to the German health insurance. You will need to provide the Foreigners' Registration Authority with proof that your home insurance company will refund the medical service charges in full, otherwise they may refuse to issue or renew your visa.
    • If you are insured at a public health insurance and your partner or childrendo not have a monthly income over 400€, then you have the possibility to insure them within a Family insurance, without any extra contribution fee. Please discuss your individual case with your insurance company.
    • If you work with expensive laboratory equipment every day, we hihgly recommend you to get an extra "work insurance" which covers the equipment costs.
    • Likewise, we recommend you to get a third party insurance for day-to-day life
