Entrance and residence regulations in Munich

Bringing your family to Munich

Please note: the following explanations do not apply to citizens of EU member states, from Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. For candidates from these countries, bringing their family with them is simpler, i.e. the same principles apply as set out under "Residence permit".

Citizens from all other countries
It is usually only possible to bring spouses and children with you under the following conditions:
  • the marriage took place before you issued the residence permit (you will need a translated and certified copy of your marriage certificate)
  • your stay in Germany is expected to last more than one year
  • you are able to provide proof that you have enough financial means to support them and that you have suitable accommodation (at least 12 sq.m/person – see § 30 of the Residence Law - AufenthG)
  • Children up to the age of 16 will usually be able to join you if both parents are staying in Germany (§ 32 of the Residence Law)

The possibility for the spouse to work, can be granted in some cases but must be approved by the Foreigners' Registration Authority. For further advice regarding your individual case, please contact the German Consulate in your home country.

    Important:
  • This website provides basic, general information only. It is advisable to contact the Foreigners' Registration Authority directly by e-mail in your own particular case: auslaenderbehoerde.kvr@muenchen.de.
  • Where a visa is required for your spouse/children, the application must be completed in your home country.
  • Children up to the age of 16 can enter Germany without knowledge of the German language. All other persons (husband/wife, children over the age of 16, etc.) are usually required to provide proof of their German language skills (Level A/1) before they can accompany or join you in Germany.
  • Living expenses and the rent have to be shared proportionately by the other persons concerned, i.e. there must be adequate financial means to support all members of the family. We therefore suggest that you contact the Foreigners' Registration Office well in advance, since the minimum funds differ from case to case and the requirements accordingly vary from one person to another (Email: auslaenderbehoerde.kvr@muenchen.de).
