Entrance and residence regulations in Munich
Work permit
If you are not the holder of a grant or do not have an employment within TUM, you will probably need to work parallel to your doctorate. As a foreign citizen, you can obtain a work permit in Germany together with your residence permit (sometimes however only under special conditions), given the case that the Foreigners' Registration Authority decides you are eligible to work in Germany.
Once the work permit has been issued, please go to the Citizens Advise Bureau (Bürgerbüro), where you can apply for a wage tax card (provided you are registered in Munich and your residence permit is still valid for at least another 6 months). Before going to the Citizens Advise Bureau, you can look up this PDF document from the DAAD to find out more about the general legal position for international students and scientists who want to work.
General facts:
- as a German citizen you have no working restrictions
- as a foreign citizen resident in Germany you are allowed to work up to 90 full days (max. 10 hrs/day) or 180 half-days (max. 4 hrs/day) per year in addition to an all-year position as a graduate/research assistant.
- Important: Should you want to take up an employment as a research assistant, you will need the approval from the Foreigners' Registration Authority. For this, you will require a written confirmation from your academic supervisor stating the exact number of working hours, the scope of the work and its connection with the doctoral program.
- Apart from the above mentioned, no additional employment forms are allowed. For further questions regarding your individual case, please contact the Registration Office directly auslaenderbehoerde.kvr@muenchen.de.
