TUM Services for doctoral candidates
Language courses
In order for you to be able to get to know Germany and its people, it is advisable that you acquire a basic knowledge of the German language. For this reason, we would like to give you a few tips regarding where and how you can learn German (or another language). The TUM Graduate School takes over the costs of a TUM internal German language course for all its members.- If you want to be prepared before you arrive in Germany, the online Duo language courses may be of interest to you
- The first choice here in Munich is the TUM Language Center (participation in the courses is free for enrolled doctoral candidates)
- Alternatively, you can register at one of the many other language schools to improve your German skills. Depending on the school, the length and intensity of the course, fees range from about 200€ to 1000€
- In addition, it is a good idea to look for a so-called "tandem partner" – based on the idea of working together in pairs to practise each other's mother tongue. You can look for such an opportunity within the faculties or departments, also via our Schwarzes Brett, or the so-called Sprachduo (for ideas on possible topics of conversation and exercises look up here).
