Living in Munich

Public Transportation

To get around within Munich, you either need a bicycle or you can use the public transportation service (Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (MVV). Munich's transport network is considered to be one of the best in Europe and offers not only regular one-way or respectively carnet-tickets, but also daily , group or monthly tickets. The costs refer to your status (e.g. enrolled doctoral candidate) and the length of your route. The whole area of Munich is divided into rings and zones (details can be found here), the more rings you need the more expensive the ticket gets. It is also advisable to inform yourself about train passes, e.g. the IsarCard (especially for candidates who are not enrolled).

Should you wish to go beyond the outskirts of the city, you can choose between the following alternatives:

  • By rail
Deutsche Bahn / German Railways offers special tickets (so-called Bahn Cards) which reduce normal train fares by up to 50%. Look out for other regular discounts, for e.g. the BayernTicket, which allows you to travel unrestricted all over Bavaria for a whole day using regional trains, costs only about 19€ (for a single person) and 29€ (for groups of 2-5 people).

  • The car-sharing agency
These agencies have plenty of options for reaching your destination quickly and under good prices conditions. All you have to do is consult the website of one of the car-sharing exchanges (such as Mitfahrgelegenheit or Mitfahrzentrale) to see who is going where and when, call them and ask if they have a free place for you in the car, then arrange a meeting place. If you are the owner of a car you can also search for passengers to share the travel-costs with, just post your offer on one of the websites of the car-sharing exchanges.
