Munich with children: child care and schools

Children aged 3 years and over are entitled to a place at a local kindergarten in Germany. Nevertheless, it can take some time to find the right day-care centre (especially for children under 3 years, as there is a shortage of childcare facilities) or a suitable school for children of school age. As it is quite difficult to organize these things from abroad, we strongly recommend you to inform yourself regarding Germany's childcare and school system well in advance.

  • General information can be found under the following links:

  • In addition, there is a parent and child information service at Munich's Town Hall every Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. (see unter Children Authorities). You do not need an appointment for on-the-spot counseling and informative brochures. Contact via: Tel.: 089-233-49555 or e-mail: kinderbeauftragte.soz@muenchen.de

  • You can address your individual situation to the staff of the TUM Family Service. They will help you with any queries and problems that might arise:

If you are planning to bring your child with you to Germany, you have the possibility to apply for child allowance paid by the German Government. Usually child allowance is paid when the applicant is domiciled or resident in Germany or when applicants abroad pay taxes in Germany. Nevertheless there are certain circumstances under which applicants may be eligible even though they do not belong to one of the above mentioned groups. More information can be found here.
