Nurturing talent – shaping the future

Research for the future
There has been a dramatic increase in international competition for new discoveries and technologies. Demographic changes, the enlargement of the EU to include Eastern European countries and the expanding markets of China and India are turning the battle for innovation into the vital, determining factor in national economic policies. And the universities appear to be the driving force behind scientific progress. TUM's range of subjects is unique throughout the whole of Europe, providing a sound basis for addressing complex research topics on an interdisciplinary level. More

Attracting and retaining top talent
Our university is keen to attract outstanding candidates from all over the world and keep the best talent in Germany. It is for this reason that we create attractive scholarship programs and offer top-level international scientists optimum conditions for interdisciplinary research. It is vital that we promote motivated academics with every means at our disposal – this particularly applies to female students and scientists who need extra support in order to reconcile work and family obligations. Our aim is to become the most attractive technical university for women. More

Fostering education
Owing to our lack of raw materials and mineral deposits, education is our country's key resource on the global playing-field. We wish to instil in our youngsters a fascination for technology and science while they are still at school and encourage them to opt for a university course or an apprenticeship in these fields. To this end, it is imperative that grammar school and vocational school staff are given the benefit of excellent teacher training and regular advanced seminars in order to overcome the dearth of specialist teachers and to sustain Germany's competitiveness as a centre of commerce and industry. More

Creating sustainability
Thanks to the prevalence of foundation funding, top-ranking universities in the USA and Great Britain have access to considerably more financial means than the resources at the disposal of Germany's state universities. The fact that TUM officially ranks among the 60 top universities in the world despite this disadvantage is an indication of its huge potential. We need to become less dependent on state funding in order to sustain excellent projects and respond in a flexible manner to fresh challenges. More
