Application and funding

Application

If you come from abroad and would like to teach or conduct research at TU München for a while, there are two ways to proceed:

1. You can apply for any vacancy advertised by TU München. All advertised positions are announced here together with guidelines for submitting your application.

2. Alternatively, if no suitable positions are advertised or if there are only job vacancies that do not match your expectations, you can try to find somebody at TU München who is willing to act at your host for the research project you have in mind. In such cases, however, it is generally advisable for you to have sufficient financial means to fund the project yourself, either in the form of a grant that you have already been awarded or one which is pending. Under normal circumstances, only TU München professors can act as hosts.

Since professors frequently receive enquiries from overseas, the best procedure is as follows:

  • You should have some definite ideas about your research project or concept before looking into the matter of a suitable host.

  • Begin by obtaining detailed information on the individual faculties, institutes, departments and professors at TU München to find out which professor would be the most appropriate host in your case. Someone whose field of research covers the same or similar topics to your own would be ideal (which is why it is important for you to know in advance what you want to do at TU München). Please click here for an overview of all the faculties at TU München, which will refer you to the relevant faculty homepage for obtaining the information you need on the respective departments, research areas and professors. An overview of the most important research centers, -projects and -cooperations can be found here.
  • Once you have found the ideal potential host for your project, you can apply directly to him or her (not the International Office) in writing enclosing a letter of motivation, your curriculum vitae, list of publications and an outline of your proposed project or statement of purpose. The more precisely you set out your reasons for believing you can accomplish your project optimally with this particular host at TU München and how you intend to finance your stay, the greater your chances of succeeding. If you have the opportunity, you can also approach the individual concerned in person, at a meeting or conference, for example.

Should you experience difficulties finding the contact data of your potential host, you can click here and enter his/her name in order to search for his/her particulars. If you have trouble finding out what you need to know about your area of research via the web pages of TU München, maybe because they are available in German only, please feel free to contact us and tell us which faculty it is and which area of research you are interested in.

We regret that applications sent to our office cannot be processed or forwarded.

Funding

Please read on if you come from abroad and are in search of a grant or funding for your stay at TU München.

Generally speaking, TU München does not award scholarships or other grants. For this reason, you will need to apply to an independent organisation yourself for a grant. The following links will advise you which organisations, predominantly in Germany, award grants for research projects so you can submit an application.

Please note that there may also be organisations or institutions in your country to whom you can apply for a grant. It is wise to explore this channel as well.
